Mass Violence Motivated By Hate: Are New Domestic Terrorism Laws the Answer?

In the aftermath of a mass shooting targeting “Mexicans” in El Paso, political leaders have introduced new domestic terrorism laws at state and federal levels. In New York, for instance, Gov. Cuomo introduced the Hate Crimes Domestic Terrorism Act treating mass violence motivated by hate as terrorist crimes. Additionally, Sen. McSally and Rep. Schiff recently spearheaded similar initiatives in Congress. Under the proposed laws, attacks like the one in El Paso, the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, and the Emanuel African Episcopal Church in Charleston can be prosecuted as terrorism.

Previously, federal law defined domestic terrorism, but failed to include corresponding criminal penalties. According to federal law enforcement, this gap prevented them from pursuing domestic terrorism charges. Instead, they charge suspects with murder, assault, unlawfully possessing firearms and/or under a federal hate crimes statute when there is evidence of the requisite bias motive. Many Americans applaud the newly proposed laws, arguing that we should draw no distinction between mass violence perpetrated by white supremacists versus that of foreign actors.

Yet, civil libertarians are sounding the alarm, warning that law enforcement - who have prioritized ‘Black Identity Extremists’ as terrorist threats over white nationalists and al-Qaeda - may later misuse these laws to silence non-violent dissent. Do these laws put Black Lives Matter supporters, anti-war protestors and/or animal rights activists at risk? Do they presently incorporate sufficient safeguards against such misuse and abuse?

Julia Hartley Brewer: grooming victims sacrificed for political correctness

Victims of grooming gangs in Oldham have received official apologies after a major report said police and the local council failed to protect some youngsters from sexual exploitation but concluded there was no official cover-up.

The report looked into the alleged grooming of children in council homes, shisha bars and by taxi drivers in the town and concluded there was no evidence of a cover-up or “widespread” child sex abuse in those settings.

Despite “legitimate concerns” from police and the council in Oldham of the far right capitalising on the issue of grooming by predominantly Pakistani men, the authorities in the town, which suffered race riots in 2001, did not shy away from tackling the issue, the report said.

But the authorities did fail some children, the report concluded.

Man who raped, impregnated 9-year-old girl pleads guilty, sentenced to life in prison

A man accused of raping and impregnating a young Columbus girl learned his punishment Wednesday.

Gerson Fuentes agreed to a plea deal and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. He will also be a Tier 3 Sex Offender.

The girl was raped at age 9, and then, at age 10 a few weeks later, had to travel to Indiana with her mom to get an abortion at the height of the Roe v. Wade overturn last year.

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who is known for her tough stand on illegal migrants, on Sunday came down hard on British Pakistani men who she alleged were harming white English girls in Britain. She said that some British Pakistanis were running child abuse networks in the UK and that the authorities and civil society were turning a blind eye out of political correctness.

"(We see) a practice whereby vulnerable white English girls - sometimes in care, sometimes in challenging circumstances - being pursued, raped, drugged, and harmed by gangs of British Pakistani men, who work in child abuse rings or networks," Braverman said while speaking to British news channel Sky News.

‘Rape survivor is not a complainant or a victim – she is a hero’ says judge in Paul Quinn sentencing

► The only word that adequately describes people who bring rape cases to court is “hero”.

A judge has paid tribute to a woman who was raped in a horrific roadside attack in 2003, calling her a “hero”, as he jailed her attacker for 24 years.
Paul Quinn was sentenced on Friday - having earlier being found guilty of rape, strangulation and grievous bodily harm – for the crime that saw Andrew Malkinson wrongly serving 17 years.

The now 60-year-old was released in 2020, and his conviction was quashed in 2023 after DNA evidence identified Quinn.

In sentencing Quinn, Mr Justice Bright spoke of the “heroic” actions of the woman who had enduring an attack so violent she was lucky to have survived and then spent 23 years waiting for justice to be served.

Mr Justice Bright said it has “troubled” him for a long time that the judicial system has “utterly inadequate terms” for the person to whom crime is done.
“We use the word complainant,” but that sounds like someone complaining about a “trivial grievance”, he told the court, adding, “victim” sounds like someone “with no agency”. The terms, he says, are demeaning.

People who take such cases to court, Mr Justice Bright said, have “gumption by the truckload”. Of those involved in rape proceedings, he said: “Every single one of them should be thanked and admired unstintingly by every single one of us.”
