Why does the UK's air traffic control system keep breaking?

More than 200 flights have been cancelled after a second air traffic control issue in less than a fortnight caused further flight disruption across much of the UK.

Aviation analytics company Cirium said 117 flights departing the UK and 110 due to arrive in the UK were cancelled on Monday.

This is less than 4% of the total inbound and outbound flights operating in the UK.

Cirium said easyJet was the worst impacted, with 47 of 670 scheduled UK departures cancelled, 7% of their total.

National Air Traffic Services (Nats) said the issue was unrelated to a software fault at Nats on September 8, which caused more than 2,000 flights to be cancelled, disrupting hundreds of thousands of passengers.

Airports in Edinburgh, Belfast and Manchester and Newcastle were registering delayed flights and urged passengers to check with their airlines.
