We started living off the grid here in the Canadian wilderness four years ago and in the first year we couldn't grow a garden because the conifer trees were too tall and shaded everything out! Then, last year we filled the raised beds (we milled with our chainsaw) with too many wood chips making the carbon levels too high in the soil. Now the wood chips have composted and our Hügelkultur principals are giving us an abundant garden harvest! Nicolle lead you on a tour of the garden and harvest at the end of the video! Jake also freedives and spearfishes and puts away the most firewood so far!!! Fox is making us laugh all day! Our sailboat is almost here ⛵️!

For over 598 days, we've been living without a reliable power source in our cabin in the woods. We constantly run out of power, and we wish we could show you what that looks like, but it's just dark! Think about all of the things you use electricity for every day. Pretty tough to go without, right?! Well it's something we've learned not to take for granted, because it's been so hard to come by... UNTIL NOW! We're installing a 48 volt electrical system with over 10,000 watts of solar power and 28 kWh of battery storage to harvest the sun's energy! This has been our most complex project to date. While this isn't our first time dabbling in electricity (if you recall the first three letters of our channel, we built our van--including all the electric--ourselves from top to bottom), but it is one of our most ambitious! After a lot of hard work, mistakes, sweat and tears, it all comes down to the moment of truth: will our power work?! The answer, all comes down to a flick of the switch! Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. We're a couple trying our best to live a more self reliant life after a med release from the army changed everything. We are currently building off grid on a small mountain in the woods.

Jake and Nicolle and their son Fox are living in the temperate rain forest and the winter is almost over. But, before winter ends nature is throwing a variety of magical weather our way including sun, rain, wind, snow, hail, sleet, and graupel many times all in the same day. The rain forest is an abundant and mysterious place. A local barge captain told us yesterday he saw his first bear of the season on the beach so the bears are now awake also. In this episode of the Jake and Nicolle show we powder kelp seaweed, make our own sea salt using fire and ocean water, free dive for fish and scallops, cook home made and home grown potato gnocchi, and chop wood endlessly to stay warm. We have now used about 50% of our wood storage and won't be able to dry more wood until end of May. Do you think we will make it? Starting in our next episode every @OffGridLife episode will cover the construction of a massive 40' x 20' greenhouse and the building of a shipping container earthship home. We finally get a tractor to help Jake complete these projects (and to save his back).
