UK military supported US operation to seize tanker in Atlantic with air surveillance and navy ship, Ministry of Defence says.

The ship is accused of breaking US sanctions and shipping Iranian oil - it's historically transported Venezuelan crude oil but reports say it's empty at the moment.

"This action formed part of global efforts to crack down on sanctions busting", UK Defence Secretary John Healey MP said.

"This ship, with a nefarious history, is part of a Russian-Iranian axis of sanctions evasion which is fuelling terrorism, conflict, and misery from the Middle East to Ukraine", he added.

President Trump has issued a new threat to Iran - promising that for every Iranian missile fired at a ship in the Gulf, America will bomb a part in the Islamic Republic.

That news came before the US signed a nuclear energy deal with Saudi Arabia - creating the potential for the Kingdom to carry out uranium enrichment on its soil.

The agreement however has raised concerns that it could lead to new rounds of nuclear competition in an already-volatile region.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has told ITV News that the government is increasing defence spending too slowly. She said it is imperative to move "further and faster" than the current plans, to ensure the 3% of GDP target is met.

Ahead of the publication of the Defence Investment Plan, or "DIP" next week - which is set to be Sir Keir Starmer’s last big initiative as PM - she said in an exclusive ITV News interview that the funding element of the DIP was inadequate.

She is siding with John Healey, who resigned as defence secretary last month because of his deep concern that Starmer’s plan to spend just 2.68% of GDP on defence is imperilling the country’s security.

Cooper is also highlighting a major dilemma for Andy Burnham for the early weeks of his time in office, if he becomes prime minister, because he won’t be able to find the extra £15 billion a year, or so Cooper believes is needed for defence.

Her intervention will increase pressure on him to spell out how he will reconcile his many priorities that are all competing for additional money, including major reforms to reduce the cost of energy and housing.

Burnham is yet to say whether he will increase taxation - or can accelerate savings from welfare reform - given that his commitment to stay within the fiscal rules would make it impossible to borrow significantly more.

ITV News was speaking to Cooper as she visited a military encampment near the Russian border, where British, Polish, American and other NATO troops are engaged in continuous exercises and preparations for a possible Russian invasion.

A new travel system for visitors to the UK comes into force from Wednesday for citizens of 85 different countries including the US and Australia.

The UK government says electronic travel authorisation (ETA) will streamline the immigration system, speed it up and make it more secure.

Once approved, an ETA would allow you to stay in the UK for up to six months for things like tourism, business or short-term study.

Dual nationals cannot get an ETA, and will need to show either a British passport or a certificate of entitlement to enter the UK.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will move back to the UK later this month, according to media reports.

The couple relocated to the US in March 2020 with their son, Archie, who was almost one at the time. They went on to welcome a daughter, Lilibet, while living in California.

According to reports in the Telegraph, The Sun and People Magazine, the children - now aged seven and five - will start at a British school in September and the family will live in a non-royal residence outside London.

Russia has warned of "consequences" for the UK, after is was confirmed that British-made drones were used by Ukraine to strike Russia.

The Russian embassy in London earlier accused Britain of "deliberately opting for an escalation of the Ukraine crisis", adding that "the deeper its involvement in the conflict... the higher the price it will pay". In response, prime minister Andy Burnham has reiterated that the UK ‘supports Ukraine 100%’.

Ukrainian forces said they launched 620 drones at Moscow and the surrounding area Tuesday, one of their biggest drone attacks on Russia since the invasion.

And in Ukraine, a Russian missile strike in the Khrakiv region has killed at least ten people.

Il a été appréhendé jeudi à l’aéroport international Louis-Armstrong de La Nouvelle-Orléans, en Louisiane, a précisé le ministère de la Sécurité intérieure.

As first reported by the Daily Telegraph and the Sun, Prince Harry and Meghan intend to relocate from the US later this month to a private, non-royal residence outside London.
