The drought afflicting parts of southern and central England and Wales, is having a devastating impact on the regions' usually tranquil canals.
Shrinking water levels in many canals are leading to the closure of the locks - with a costly knock-on effect for those whose livelihoods depend on the waterways.

A teenager who travelled from Norway to the UK to carry out an assassination for a Swedish organised crime group has been found guilty of conspiracy to murder.
An Old Bailey jury heard how Johannes Natland, 19, was arrested in a hotel room in Huddersfield with two working guns and 19 rounds of live ammunition in March 2025.
He pleaded guilty to possession of the firearms and ammunition but had denied the conspiracy charge.
Following a retrial, Natland showed no emotion as the jury brought in a unanimous guilty verdict after deliberating for just over 17 hours.
During the trial opening, prosecutor Alistair Richardson said the teen was "recruited" by the Foxtrot Network, which was described as a Swedish organised crime group backed by the Iranian regime.
Natland had claimed rather than carry out the attack, he had planned to shoot himself in the foot, telling jurors he had found himself in "a major pickle".
The court heard how the Foxtrot Network had been sanctioned by both the UK and the US for its close links to the Iranian government.
The group is infamous for pioneering the relatively new phenomenon of hiring teenage killers.
Natland flew into Manchester Airport on an emergency passport on 17 March and was guided by videos on the messaging app Signal to Huddersfield, where the guns, a stolen car and a stash of cash were hidden.
He was only prevented from carrying out the hit because Norwegian police arrested the teenager who had recruited him, and found messages about the UK plot in the Signal app on his phone.
Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Daniel Sandford.

Parliamentary standards investigations now hang over the two most senior figures in Reform UK: Nigel Farage and his deputy Richard Tice.
[Subscribe to our Substack newsletter: https://channel4news.substack.com/subscribe]
This is the backdrop to Reform UK announcing today that if they get into power they would use the Royal Navy to stop the small boats mid-Channel.
Reform UK's press conference was overshadowed by continuing questions about party finances and the news that Richard Tice is under investigation by parliament's standards watchdog over an alleged failure to declare an interest while taking part in a debate on Israel.
This is on top of the investigation already underway for the party’s leader about the £5 million he received from a Thai-based crypto billionaire.
Even though the number of boat crossings has declined year on year, the issue of migrant incursions in general was catapulted to the front pages when 70,000 Moroccans swarmed into the Spanish territory of Ceuta last week. So is Reform offering a solution or a distraction?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly considering a move back to the UK with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, around six years after stepping down as working members of the Royal Family and relocating to the US.
The potential return comes as Harry has continued to highlight his ties to Britain and his concerns over security arrangements for his family. The Duke of Sussex has previously said he wants his children to have a connection with the UK, where he grew up and where much of his family remains.

A convicted people smuggler, described as the “godfather" of the French migrant camps, is living and working in an English village where he’s believed to be seeking asylum, a BBC investigation can reveal.
Twana Jamal was given a five-year jail sentence in France in 2016, where authorities described him as one of the most successful people-smugglers ever caught.
Following a tip-off this year, the BBC traced Jamal to Blaby in Leicestershire, where we witnessed him working illegally, driving a car without a licence and apparently using a false name.
Jamal is one of more than 20 people smugglers the BBC has found to have reached the UK, raising serious concerns about whether existing border controls are effective in checking asylum seekers who have committed serious crimes overseas.
The Home Office told us: "All asylum claimants are subject to mandatory security checks to confirm their identity for the purpose of immigration, security and criminality checks”, and that the UK has "a number of agreements with countries which enable the sharing of criminal record information", adding that immigration enforcement action is currently at its highest level in history.

Migrants are falsely claiming to be victims of domestic abuse in order to stay in the UK, a BBC investigation has discovered.
They are exploiting rules brought in by ministers to help genuine victims of abuse to secure permanent residence more quickly than through other routes, such as asylum.
Lawyers have said inadequate Home Office checks are allowing them to do so on the basis of little evidence, while their unsuspecting British partners have had their lives turned upside down by the false accusations.
In response, Jess Phillips, the minister for safeguarding in the Home Office, has said: "Sham lawyers facilitating this advice abuse will be put behind bars and their dirty money seized will be reinvested to shut down the crime they once bankrolled.
