UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Donald Trump’s threats of new tariffs on European nations would damage the British economy.

Starmer argued that “a trade war is in no one’s interests” and that tariffs “hurt British workers, British businesses and the British economy.”

The UK is co-ordinating closely with its European allies over their response to Trump's threats, and Starmer expects to speak again with Trump in the coming days.

Only Greenland and Denmark should decide the future of Greenland, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has told the BBC, after President Trump again said "we need Greenland from the standpoint of national security".

The US president and senior members of his administration have repeatedly raised the prospect of the semi-autonomous Danish territory becoming an annexed part of the United States.

Both Greenland's prime minister and Denmark's prime minister strongly rejected the idea over the weekend.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen responded to Trump's latest comments by saying "that's enough now" and described the notion of US control over the island as a "fantasy".

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky met key European allies in London on Monday as he faces US pressure to reach a swift peace deal with Russia.

Zelensky held talks with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The meeting came amid US efforts to get Moscow and Kyiv to sign up - quickly - to a plan to end the war in Ukraine.

For Kyiv, the crucial issues are the question of ceding territory to Russia as part of any peace deal and obtaining strong security guarantees to ensure that Moscow respects an eventual agreement.

The big names Starmer hosted in London discussed hugely significant issues - not only for Ukraine's future, but for the security of the continent as a whole.

US tariff threats over the future of Greenland “undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral”, the UK and seven other affected European countries have said.

In a joint statement on Sunday, the countries said they will “stand united and coordinated” in their response.

The US president said on Saturday that the UK will be charged a 10% tariff “on any and all goods” sent to the US from February 1, increased to 25% from June 1, until a deal is reached for Washington to purchase Greenland from Denmark.

US President Donald Trump has criticised European leaders as "weak" and suggested the US could scale back support for Ukraine.

In an interview with Politico, he said "decaying" European countries had failed to control migration or take decisive action to end Ukraine's war with Russia, accusing them of letting Kyiv fight "until they drop".

In the UK, Downing Street rejected Trump's claim that Europe had failed to act, citing the UK's role on sanctions and support for the peace process.

Zelensky, writing on X later on Tuesday, said Ukraine and Europe were working actively on "all components of potential steps toward ending the war", that the Ukrainian and European elements of the plan were now more developed and that Kyiv was ready to present them to "our partners in the US".

Trump's latest public criticism of Europe comes a day after European leaders came together in London to discuss their continued joint efforts to stop the fighting in Ukraine.

The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and Donald Trump ally Mike Johnson has told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that he doesn’t “foresee military intervention in Greenland” by America.

He told the BBC “diplomatic channels are the way to go” when asked about how President Trump planned to acquire Greenland without military action and said his appointment of a Greenland envoy demonstrated that this intention.

In an interview recorded before President Trump announced tariffs on the UK and other European countries in response to the Greenland row, Mr Johnson said Donald Trump was “playing chess” in his handling of the issue but that he hadn’t discussed it specifically with the president.

Sir Keir Starmer made an emergency speech in times - with tensions over Greenland triggering the most serious transatlantic crisis in decades.

Sky's political editor Beth Rigby said the emergency address was the "gravest" she has ever seen the prime minister.

"A break with the US would hurt our economy, our security, our way of life - so Keir Starmer is desperately trying to de-escalate but even as he does that, Trump is upping the ante - insisting he will impose tariffs and he will take Greenland one way or the other".
