I feel like a Billie Eilish cover has been long overdue, but I’ve struggled to interpret her songs in the past. This one was a challenge too, but I tried to lean into the fairytale/Disney vibes. It could even belong in an animated Barbie movie from the early 2000s. I hope you enjoy this silly and whimsical interpretation, thank you for listening!

The Art:

The image is Maria van Bourgondië by Albert de Vriendt, but I’ve re-painted the face to look like Billie.

The Lyrics:

I want thee to stay
Till I am in the grave
Until I rot away, dead and buried
Lying in the casket thou dost carry

If thou goest, I go too
‘Tis thee, I always knew
If I am turning blue, do not save me
No one but my true love shall wake me

Birds of a feather, we should flock together, I know I said I’d never think I was not better alone
Capricious weather, might not be forever
But if it is forever, ‘tis all the better

I know not what I am crying for
I think I could not love thee more
It might be brief, but lambkin I
I shall love thee till the day that I die

Till the day that I die
Till the see runneth dry
Till the day that I die

Couldst thou but only see
Thyself as I see thee
Thou wouldst learn to trust thy reflection
‘Tis the very soul of perfection
But thou’rt modest to a fault
Thee whom I exalt
‘Tis better to be ardent than prudish
Thou sayest “let it end”
Be not foolish

I know not what I am crying for
I think I could not love thee more
It might be brief, but lambkin I
I cannot say goodbye

Birds of a feather, we should flock together, I know I said I’d never think I was not better alone
Capricious weather, might not be forever
But if it is forever, ‘tis all the better

I knew thee in another life
Thou hadst that same look in thine eyes
I love thee, act not so surprised
