How to grow and care lemon grass and list out the benefits of lemongrass for your health and your home garden.
Lemon grass with botanical name as cymbopogon citratus, is a commonly cultivated grass like herbal plant grown in Asia (specially India), Africa and Australia. It has a lemon scented fragrance and hence the name.
Its commonly used as a kitchen flavouring agent in making tea, soups, and some curries.
Lemongrass oil is used as a pesticide , preservative, also used in soaps and insect repellents and it also has antiseptic and antifungal properties.
It’s a mosquito repellent plant and this drives away mosquitoes and other harmful insects but luckily it attracts beneficial insects and pollinators like honey bees and butterflies. You can watch my previous video on the list of effective Mosquito Repellent plants.
Now few points on Health Benefits of lemon grass as described by Ayurvedic medicine:
- Lemongrass has anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-hypercholesterolemic properties.
- Its antioxidant and diuretic properties help in Body Detoxication. Diuretic effect means it increases urination.
- It has Antiseptic, Anticancer and Antifungal effects.
- Its also used in Ayurvedic treatment of Gastric disorders like Ulcer, Diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis due to its effect on pathogens like Helicobacter pylori and Escherichia coli.
- Treating Sleep disorders or Insomnias. It calms down your muscles and nerves and relaxes your body.
- Other uses like Treatment of Fever, cough, cold, Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity, Improve immunity and so on… as claimed by Ayurveda.
Well, now we will look into repotting the plant and also talk on How to care lemon grass.
The Requirements for Lemon Grass are:
1. Full Sunlight of 4 to 6 hours minimum
2. Well Draining Soil
3. Good Watering
4. If you are growing in pots – use larger or wider pots and it give offsets or babies and propagates itself.
5. You can harvest lemon grass once it becomes about 12 inches tall. Cut near the base of the plant or ground level and leave it again to grow.
