The traditional ratio of chemicals, as originally designed by the ancient chinese architects of black powder which was first used for rockets and other items of ancient warfare, is 75-15-10.
75 grams salt-petre aka potassium nitrate (KnO3)
15 grams charcoal, aka carbon
(C)
10 grams sulfur
(S)
and that is per 100 grams, with an optional 5 grams of dextrin to act as a drying binder, making a total of 105 grams, I tumble the dextrin in for just 20 minutes in the ball mill after the 6 to 8 hours tumbling the main 3 ingredients. After tumbling in dextrin, I wet it down just slightly, just enough to make it as moist as clay, using rubbing alcohol so the drying process is quite fast, I then clump it very tight by hand with gloves into a ball and then rub that inside of a screen, to form granules that make excellent muzzleloader ammo fuel. For sulfur free powder, I do the same thing, except the ratio is 80 parts potassium nitrate (KnO3) to 20 parts charcoal (C). To make good pure sulfur, I bought "Lilly Miller's Garden Sulfur" which is only 90% pure sulfur with 10% additives, and mixed a few cups with water, stirred well, then ran that thru a coffee filter, since sulfur is not water soluble, the 10% impurities go thru the filter, the sulfur stays in the filter, I take that big ball of yellow and let it dry out, now I've got 100% sulfur.
