Law enforcement is struggling to stop the growing sale of illegal tobacco in mini marts across British high streets, a BBC investigation has revealed.

Trading Standards teams say they don’t have the resources to tackle the organised crime gangs suspected of supplying some of the shops and said the profits being made are on a par with selling heroin and cocaine.

Trading standards has described the issue as a war, and that asylum seekers with no right to work in the UK have been found inside some of the shops. HMRC says it costs the country at least £2.2 billion in lost revenue.

In response to our report, the Home Secretary said it was a disgrace that criminal gangs are trying to abuse our high streets and said the government has increased raids and arrests for illegal working by 50 per cent since the election.

The UK government has confirmed a U-turn on its cuts to disability benefits in a bid to avert a rebellion by more than 120 Labour backbenchers.

People who currently receive personal independence payments (Pip), or the health element of universal credit, will continue to do so.

Instead, changes will apply only to new claimants from November 2026.

The UK's Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has declined to put a figure on how many migrants will be returned to France under a new scheme that comes into force today.

Some migrants arriving in the UK on small boats will be detained and returned to France under the deal agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron.

In return, the UK will accept asylum seekers who have not tried to cross and can pass security and eligibility checks.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the plan was a "product of months of grown-up diplomacy" which would "deliver real results" but the Conservatives said it would "make no difference whatsoever".

As of 30 July, more than 25,000 people had crossed the Channel in small boats in 2025 - about 49% higher than at the same point in 2024.

UK and international law prevents the government from sending asylum seekers back to their country of origin before their claim has been considered and turned down. However, they can be sent to safe countries prepared to consider their claim.

There are increasing reports of people suffering "AI psychosis", Microsoft's head of artificial intelligence (AI), Mustafa Suleyman, has warned.

In a series of posts on X, he wrote that "seemingly conscious AI" are keeping him "awake at night" and said they have societal impact even though the technology is not conscious in any human definition of the term.

"There's zero evidence of AI consciousness today. But if people just perceive it as conscious, they will believe that perception as reality," he wrote.

Related to this is the rise of a new condition called "AI psychosis": a non-clinical term describing incidents where people increasingly rely on AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Grok and then become convinced that something imaginary has become real.

A row has broken out between the Tories and Reform UK over comments previously made by Robert Jenrick about migrant hotels.

At the centre of the argument is an interview Mr Jenrick did with Sky News in November 2022, one week after he was appointed immigration minister in Rishi Sunak's government.

Almost three years later, this clip has been seized on by Reform UK as evidence that the Tory MP "boasted" about how many hotels he had opened for asylum seekers.
