On Ukraine's 35th Independence Day, Prime Minister Andy Burnham dismissed Russian threats of consequences for participating in the war, and pledged UK support "all the way".
Burnham took missile blueprints to Ukraine, as Britain and France gave it permission to build its own version of Storm Shadow long-range missiles to attack Russia.

But it is American Patriot interceptor missiles that Ukraine needs to protect its civilians and Donald Trump has backtracked on his offer to give Ukraine the designs for them.
When Russia claimed that would "add fuel to the fire", Burnham hit back -asking "who started the fire?"
But what Ukraine urgently needs is air defence.

Every time you click "buy" on an online order, the chances are that your purchase starts getting processed within minutes.
Increasingly, the journey starts with a squat silver floor robot gliding beneath a storage rack, lifting a shelf and carrying it across a warehouse to a waiting worker.
At Geek+'s factory in the eastern Chinese city of Hefei, fleets of the robots are built and tested before being shipped to warehouses around the world.
Some of Britain's biggest retailers - including Tesco, Asda and Next - now use the company's technology.

Iran has threatened to attack British bases being used by the US to launch operations against Iran. It accused the UK of being an "accomplice" of the US military and said that UK bases used by US forces were “legitimate targets”.
The UK has allowed the US to launch "defensive" operations from British bases hosting American personnel and aircraft, while refusing to cooperate in offensive operations against Iran.
In response to Iran’s comments, the UK government said it "stands ready 24/7 to defend itself". It followed a 12th consecutive night of US strikes against targets in Iran, with the ceasefire that had been agreed between the two countries apparently abandoned.
In March 2026, shortly after the start of the US-Israel led war against Iran, the UK gave the US permission to use British bases, including RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, to target Iranian military infrastructure used to attack Gulf countries and vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The escalating war, and continuing block on commercial shipping through the strait of Hormuz, has led to a new surge in global oil prices, which have again reached more than $100 per barrel.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jeremy Bowen and Faisal Islam.

The Met Office has issued a rare amber extreme heat warning for Thursday, with temperatures peaking in the mid-to-high 30s across the Midlands and south-east of England, and a high of 38C possible.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham will chair a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee on Wednesday to discuss the UK's response to the extreme heat.
A No 10 spokesperson said the government understood firefighters, farmers and NHS staff were all facing challenges connected to the weather.

London-based philosopher and political analyst @VladVexler analyses the Kremlin’s geopolitical strategy, explaining why Russia uses hybrid warfare and low-threshold provocations to target Western political stability.
Russia has ramped up its thinly veiled threats towards Britain sparking fears Vladimir Putin could send the two nations spiralling towards a terrifying conflict.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton discusses the reasons behind Harry and Meghan's decision to return to the UK.
It comes against a backdrop of a brother who acts as a "hitman" instead of a "wingman", the Sussexes in need of money, and a distinct lack of trust within the Royal Family.

Millions of people visit Cornwall every year for its beaches, coastline and pretty coastal towns.
But for many young people growing up there, life can look very different.
From long journeys to work experience and university open days, to the challenge of accessing opportunities - some students say they face difficult choices about whether to stay or leave.
And the data that often makes the headlines, about poor outcomes in the North, don’t show the full picture. BBC Education Editor Branwen Jeffreys headed to the south west of England to see why it’s falling behind.

BREAKING: Reform UK has announced that all foreign-born convicts will be deported, as Nigel Farage and Zia Yusuf outline the party’s plans for dealing with foreign national offenders and the early release of prisoners.
Nigel Farage says the Conservatives and Labour are both culpable for the prisoner early-release scheme, while confirming that, if foreign national offenders refuse to leave, Reform UK would seek to send them to third countries. Farage has also confirmed that Reform UK will travel to El Salvador to explore the possibility of deporting foreign prisoners there, saying: “We will deport foreign criminals to serve their sentences abroad.”
Zia Yusuf vows that, under a Reform UK government, dangerous criminals would serve their sentences in full and foreign nationals would not take up UK prison space. He says the British people are being “tormented by dangerous criminals who should be in jail” and that serious criminals “will never be released early” under a Reform UK government.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning to move back to the UK, the BBC has confirmed.
Prince Harry and Meghan intend to relocate from the US later this month to a private, non-royal residence outside London.
The couple's children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are enrolled to start at a British school in September.
King Charles was told of the move three days ago. There are no current plans for either of Prince Harry or Meghan to resume their roles as working Royals.
The Sussexes and their children visited King Charles at Highgrove in July, but it is understood the move was not discussed.
Prince William and Princess Catherine have also been informed of the move.

Patrick Christys slams Harry and Meghan as he reveals the timing of their UK return could mean they avoid paying tax on certain gains whilst living overseas.
When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to Britain last month, they spent some time in King Charles's private home in Gloucestershire, and Prince Harry also attended the one-year-to-go countdown events for the Invictus Games in Birmingham.
They also visited Earl Charles Spencer's home at Althorp in Northamptonshire, where the late Princess Diana is buried. Before moving to California, Meghan and Harry lived in Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, where Prince Archie spent the first five months of his life.

Could Sir Keir Starmer face a snap general election if Labour loses a crucial King’s Speech vote in Parliament? This explainer breaks down how defeat on the King’s Speech could trigger political chaos, force a confidence crisis in the House of Commons, and potentially open the door for Nigel Farage and Reform UK to make major gains.
