The UK will begin returning migrants arriving in small boats to France within weeks under a new pilot scheme, Sir Keir Starmer has said.
Under the "one in, one out" deal, some arrivals would be detained and returned to France and in exchange the UK would accept an equivalent number of asylum seekers, subject to security checks and provided they had not tried to enter the UK illegally.
Speaking at a press conference alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, Sir Keir said the plan would demonstrate that trying to make the Channel crossing would "be in vain".
He did not confirm how many people would be returned or accepted during the pilot.

Along a one-mile stretch of road near the centre of Newport, south Wales, 19 shops have been shut down in the past nine months for selling illegal tobacco and vapes.
"It's shameful that this is happening," Steve Hay, one of the Trading Standards team responsible for the closures, said.
He believes that the sale of illegal goods is a crime causing deep problems in the community.
Illegal cigarettes, tobacco and vape products were seized from 3,624 shops across England, Scotland and Wales in 2024-25, according to BBC Freedom of Information requests.
The Home Office said that "over 500 town centres are getting extra neighbourhood patrols" and that these would have a major role in cracking down on the sale of illegal tobacco products.

UK News: 2 Sikh Men Assaulted By Teenagers In Racist Attack In UK's Wolverhampton, 3 Arrested
In a hate crime in the UK, two Sikh men were assaulted by three teenagers last Friday (August 15), causing a massive uproar. The racist attack occurred outside a railway station in Wolverhampton.
A viral footage of the incident showed the victims lying on the ground, being kicked repeatedly by one of the attackers until he was pulled away by another. The turbans of the Sikh men had come off during the assault and were seen lying next to them. 3 teenagers were arrested in connection with the hate crime but were later released on bail.

Today, more councils across England say they could take legal action, after the High Court issued a temporary injunction to stop the government from housing asylum seekers at The Bell Hotel in Epping.
Anti-migrant protests and counter protests have been taking place in Epping throughout the summer after an asylum seeker living at the hotel was charged with sexual assault.

More than 100 asylum seekers have been detained for deportation to France as Sir Keir Starmer steps up his plan to tackle the small-boats crisis amid a fresh surge in crossings and mounting pressure within Labour.
The prime minister will formally implement his one in, one out deal within weeks after renewed criticism from ministers and senior Labour figures, who have accused him of failing to get a grip on the issue.
On Monday night Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, described Starmer’s deal with France as unworkable. On Tuesday he will formally announce his own plan for tackling the small-boat crisis, which he says will lead to the “mass deportation” of hundreds of thousands of migrants.
The government’s intensified efforts to stem the flow of boats crossing the Channel will include adverts targeting asylum seekers in camps in France, warning them that they will waste their money if they pay traffickers. “Get on a small boat and you will be deported,” the adverts will say.

It comes as residents have hit out at Tower Hamlets Council in east London after it announced the patriotic displays would be removed.

Sir Keir Starmer “absolutely” supports people putting up English flags amid a row over councils tearing them down, a spokesperson said.
It comes as residents have hit out after Tower Hamlets Council, in east London, announced the patriotic displays would be removed.
The Union Jack and St George's flags were raised by locals as part of a movement online called Operation Raise the Colours.
But Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman, who was found guilty of electoral fraud in 2015, has thwarted the campaign.
The national flags will now be ripped down "as part of routine maintenance".

The UK will recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel meets certain conditions, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said.
He said the recognition will happen at the UN unless the Israeli government takes "substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza", including a ceasefire and a commitment to a long-term peace process that delivers a two-state solution.
It comes as Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel's offensive began, including 112 in the past 24 hours.
A UN-backed food security body earlier said "the worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out" in Gaza, with "mounting evidence" of widespread starvation.
Israel insists there are no restrictions on aid deliveries and that there is "no starvation".
