Greenland's prime minister has said his people would choose Denmark over the US if they were asked to make such a choice "here and now".
Jens-Frederik Nielsen's remark at a joint news conference with Denmark's prime minister is the strongest by a representative of the semi-autonomous Danish territory since US President Donald Trump renewed his plan to annex it.
Trump says the US needs to "own" Greenland to defend against Russia and China. The White House has suggested buying the island, but not ruled out the use of force to annex it.

US-Israeli strikes on Iran’s capital Tehran have targeted street checkpoints of the Basij - a volunteer militia that has suppressed protests.
On Wednesday, Iran's oldest bank, Bank Sepah, was struck by an air strike in Tehran, which is said to play a key role paying the salaries of Iran's military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
More than 1,300 people have died and 17,000 have been injured in Iran since the conflict began, Iran's Ambassador to the UN Amir-Saeid Iravani has said. The UN Refugee Agency said up to 3.2 million Iranians have been temporarily displaced in Iran due to the conflict.
Iran has continued to respond by launching attacks on Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf, which have extended to non-military targets, including civilian sites and energy facilities.

Donald Trump has dismissed British aircraft carriers as "toys" compared to US vessels, claiming the UK offered to send them only after the Iran war ends.
The president says Iran is "begging to make a deal" nearly four weeks into the conflict, but his war cabinet continues bombing while negotiations stall.

EU ambassadors are set to hold an emergency meeting later today following US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on eight allies who oppose his proposed takeover of Greenland.
Trump said he plans to impose a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland from 1 February - and could later rise to 25%.
His announcement has been met with condemnation from leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who called Trump's plan "completely wrong”.
Meanwhile, thousands of people have been protesting against Trump’s plans in both Greenland and Denmark.

Donald Trump has dismissed suggestions that his plan to take control of Greenland, in the face of opposition by his NATO allies, could lead to the break up of the alliance.
Asked about a possible threat to the future of NATO, President Trump said: “Something is going to happen which will be very good for everybody. Nato will be very happy and we will be very happy. But we need it [Greenland] for security purposes, we need it for national security and even world security.”
At a press conference at the White House, Donald Trump was also asked how far he was willing to go to acquire Greenland and replied: “You’ll find out”. He repeated his threat to impose new punitive tariffs on countries that opposed his plans.
Other leaders intensified their criticism of the US administration. The French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe had little regard for bullies and preferred the “rule of law to brutality.” Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of a “rupture” in the world order.
Mr Carney was speaking at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Switzerland, where the US President is due to arrive on Wednesday to address world leaders and business elites.

US allies have rejected President Trump’s appeal for them to send warships to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and gas usually passes.
Iran has closed the key sea lane in response to US and Israeli airstrikes, attacking ships with drones and missiles, leading to a sharp increase in global oil and gas prices and warnings of soaring inflation and an international economic crisis.
The British prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK would not be “drawn into the wider war”. He said: “Ultimately, we have to reopen the strait of Hormuz” and did not rule out any form of action, but she aid it would have to be agreed by as “many partners as possible”.
That led President Trump to again criticise Sir Keir’s response to the war, saying he had thought the UK was the “Rolls Royce of allies” but was disappointed by the lack of support.
European countries have turned down the callas for help from the US president, despite threats from Donald Trump hat Nato faces “a very bad future” if members fail to help reopen the vital waterway.
Germany ruled out participation in any military activity, saying it had not been a joint decision to launch military action against Iran. The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said: “That is why the question of how Germany might contribute militarily does not arise. We will not do so”.
Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, said “diplomacy needs to prevail”. France, along with Japan and Australia, has also said it does not plan to send warships to the region.
US allies also expressed concern over the situation in Lebanon, where Israeli forces have begun ground operations against what they say are Hezbollah strongholds in the south of the country, after days of airstrikes.

European leaders have united in condemning President Trump’s threat of new tariffs against allies who oppose his plan to annexe Greenland.
A joint statement of European leaders said: “Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral”. The statement, signed by the leaders of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland said: “We are committed to upholding our sovereignty.”
The UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told the US president in a phone call that he was wrong to make such a threat against NATO allies.
The EU made clear it could impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods or even consider economic sanctions against the United States if the US tariffs were imposed. The head of the European Council announced an emergency summit and said the EU showed “readiness to defend ourselves against any form of coercion”.
Europe’s stance could place it on a collision course with the US. Trump has said he will place sanctions on eight European nations, including the UK, that have deployed troops to Greenland in response to US threats over its future.

The US government has indicted former Cuban president Raúl Castro on charges of conspiracy to kill US nationals over a fatal attack on two planes in 1996.
Castro, who was armed forces minister at the time, is also charged with destruction of aircraft and four counts of murder - if found guilty, he could face life in prison.
Current President of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel claimed the charges are a "political" manoeuvre and says they are "devoid of any legal foundation".

At a moment of tension for the UK-US “special relationship", will King Charles' meeting with President Donald Trump help smooth relations with Prime Minister Keir Starmer?

Explosions are continuing to rock the Middle East this weekend, as the American-Israeli war on Iran and its allies entered its second week.
President Trump said Operation Epic Fury was ahead of schedule, rating it '15 out of 10'.
But he hit out again at Sir Keir Starmer's reluctance to be more fully involved, saying 'we don't need people that join wars after we've already won'.
Iranian attacks continued as well, despite a pledge from its president to stop targeting its neighbours.

Plans to impose a ban on UK imports of diesel and jet fuel made from Russian oil in third countries have been watered down amid concerns over supplies and price rises.
The UK government will now "phase in" some new sanctions over the coming months due to the effective blockade of the key Strait of Hormuz waterway since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran.
The Foreign Office denied the shift in policy could be described as a "waiver" on sanctions aimed at hurting Russia's economy, but admitted extra flexibilities were required.
Vladyslav Vlasiuk, sanctions commissioner for Ukraine, said he understood "the rationale behind the UK's decision", but said he disagreed with the approach.

In a major move that’s raising eyebrows worldwide, the United Kingdom has deployed Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar, reinforcing defenses in one of the most volatile regions on the planet. The UK government says the deployment is defensive. But the timing tells a bigger story.
