Our fourth edition of the Build Strong Data Ecosystems for SDGs series on Citizen Science and Citizen-generated Data for Monitoring the SDGs was held on 19 November. It was great to see so many participants (almost 80) in this session.

During this webinar, Rosy Mondardini, managing Director of the Citizen Science Center in Zurich, provided a brief introduction to citizen science. She stressed the advantages of citizen science data for national statistical offices with two aspects: 1) monitoring the SDGs by filling data gaps and supplementing the national data with disaggregated levels; and 2) implementing the SDGs by supporting individuals and communities. She elaborated on Citizen Science's implementation with best practices such as Fresh Water Watch in the UK and Marine Debris Initiative in Australia.

Elena Proden, Senior Specialist at UNITAR, presented a collaborative study designed and carried out as part of the EU-funded Crowd4SDG project. She elaborated on the data collections and introduced the current membership in the study advisory group and their key outputs so far.

The Global Network of Data Officers and Statisticians aims to improve coordination and collaboration among peers and organizations, to connect existing but not necessarily well-connected networks and initiatives, and to provide and share information on capacity building efforts globally. Using secondary data sourced originally in Web of Science and Scopus, the paper begins with four empirical tendencies in world science: rapid growth in the volume of published science; expansion in the number of countries with scientific capacity so that science is no longer dominated by the traditional duopoly of United States/Western Europe, together with Japan; rapid growth in international collaboration; and diversification of the group of leading research countries, so that power in science is becoming more plural. In part drawing on research in scientometrics, the paper then goes on discuss what lies behind these tendencies – and on what they might imply for the nature of knowledge, for relations of power in science, and for the potential for science to pursue the global common good.

Networked global science is expanding at such a rapid rate that some researchers of science argue that shared global activity is now more determining of science that are national systems funded by governments. Yet most analysis of global science focuses on comparisons and competition between countries (the ‘arms race in innovation’), obscuring the fact of widespread cooperation at the global level. What drives networked collaboration between scientists: is it shared knowledge accumulation, or is it self-interest and making careers as is suggested by theories of ‘professional attachment’? Who are scientists loyal to, their disciplines or national governments? Is science subordinated to global capitalism or does it have autonomy? Can science in a nation-bound world survive government or corporate efforts to suppress its key messages on global issues? And how should we understand the recent rise of national science outside the traditional duopoly, not only in China, South Korea and Singapore but in countries such as India, Iran and Brazil? How open is science to emerging countries? What does multi-polarity mean in science? Will Anglo-American hegemony in global knowledge continue or is it already breaking down?

Video Description:
A simple 4-bit computer is built on breadboards using individual transistors. This computer is called the GSN477. This is because it was built for the Global Science Network, is 4-bit, and contains two 7-stage counters.

Sections of the computer are the clock, program counter, ring counter, 10 bytes of memory, opcode register, opcode decoder, control matrix, data bus, accumulator register, output register, register B, and ALU.

Circuits are built using NAND digital logic gates, XOR gates, AND gates, inverters, buffers, and tri-state buffers. Larger circuits include D flip Flops, MS D flip flops, Edge triggered JK flip flops, and MS JK flip flops.

The computer shows how computers add and subtract numbers while running a simple program and this video was submitted for the #some3 competition.
