It has been just over two weeks since a crash on the A66 duel carriageway near Middlesborough, which killed seven people - including two police officers.

The BBC's Ed Thomas has travelled to the Grangetown area of the city, which, along with the South Bank area, has been the focus of a large police operation into organised crime following the tragedy.

Speaking exclusively to the BBC, Cleveland Police's Chief Constable Victoria Fuller has said she is proud of her "brave" force but that it was being "let down" by the way it was funded, following the fatal crash.

She said her officers are dealing with some of the highest crime levels in the country akin to those faced by metropolitan forces, but with less than half the number of officers.

Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan are facing extradition from the US to the UK after authorities announced 38 new charges against them, including rape and sex trafficking.

The total number of charges against the brothers is now 59, police said.

Andrew, 39, and Tristan, 37 - who came to global fame via social media - have previously denied any wrongdoing.

The dual British-US citizens were taken into custody and appeared before a federal court in July as prosecutors launched legal proceedings to have them sent to the UK.

Residents of a village in Oxfordshire have voted to become independent from the UK in a symbolic referendum held in protest at plans to house more than 1,000 migrants at a former military base.

Villagers in Piddington, near Bicester, voted on Tuesday over Home Office proposals to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at nearby MoD Bicester.

The 350 residents were invited to cast their ballot in a small box outside the village hall, the community hub of Piddington.

A U.S. B-1B Lancer bomber has reportedly departed RAF Fairford in the UK as Iran awaits Washington’s response to its conditions for ending the ongoing war.

Footage appears to show the strategic bomber taking off using afterburners, prompting questions over whether it was carrying a heavy weapons load. However, the aircraft’s mission remains unclear, and its departure alone does not confirm preparations for a new strike on Iran.

RAF Fairford has hosted U.S. bomber operations and rotations, including B-1B aircraft involved in Operation Epic Fury. Iranian outlets have also reported that Iran’s armed forces have been placed on their highest alert level, although Tehran has not officially confirmed the claim.

Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly sent Washington conditions for ending the war through mediators in Qatar and is awaiting a response from Trump.

The UK has announced a ban on goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. France, Canada and nine other European countries will do likewise. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband accused the Israeli government of turning a blind eye to what he described as the "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians by Jewish settlers and said its inaction was undermining the possibility of a two-state solution. In response, the Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa'ar has said that Israel is shutting down the UK consulate in Jerusalem and expelling British representatives from the International Gaza Support Centre, among other measures. Mr Sa'ar said Mr Miliband's statement was a series of outrageous lies and amounted to a blatant interference in Israel's upcoming election.

A small number of officers were injured and some vehicles damaged during a protest against small boat crossings in Portsmouth, UK, last night, police said.

Hundreds blocked roads in the city after 140 migrants were brought to shore - shadow home secretary Chris Philp says people are "genuinely angry at the government's failure to stop the boats”.

The government has condemned "intimidating and thuggish behaviour" at the protest.

A total of 625 migrants were brought to shore in Dover and Portsmouth yesterday, according to Home Office figures - although overall, the number is down in 2026.
