The UK's Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has declined to put a figure on how many migrants will be returned to France under a new scheme that comes into force today.

Some migrants arriving in the UK on small boats will be detained and returned to France under the deal agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron.

In return, the UK will accept asylum seekers who have not tried to cross and can pass security and eligibility checks.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the plan was a "product of months of grown-up diplomacy" which would "deliver real results" but the Conservatives said it would "make no difference whatsoever".

As of 30 July, more than 25,000 people had crossed the Channel in small boats in 2025 - about 49% higher than at the same point in 2024.

UK and international law prevents the government from sending asylum seekers back to their country of origin before their claim has been considered and turned down. However, they can be sent to safe countries prepared to consider their claim.

There are increasing reports of people suffering "AI psychosis", Microsoft's head of artificial intelligence (AI), Mustafa Suleyman, has warned.

In a series of posts on X, he wrote that "seemingly conscious AI" are keeping him "awake at night" and said they have societal impact even though the technology is not conscious in any human definition of the term.

"There's zero evidence of AI consciousness today. But if people just perceive it as conscious, they will believe that perception as reality," he wrote.

Related to this is the rise of a new condition called "AI psychosis": a non-clinical term describing incidents where people increasingly rely on AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Grok and then become convinced that something imaginary has become real.

A row has broken out between the Tories and Reform UK over comments previously made by Robert Jenrick about migrant hotels.

At the centre of the argument is an interview Mr Jenrick did with Sky News in November 2022, one week after he was appointed immigration minister in Rishi Sunak's government.

Almost three years later, this clip has been seized on by Reform UK as evidence that the Tory MP "boasted" about how many hotels he had opened for asylum seekers.

The UK will begin returning migrants arriving in small boats to France within weeks under a new pilot scheme, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

Under the "one in, one out" deal, some arrivals would be detained and returned to France and in exchange the UK would accept an equivalent number of asylum seekers, subject to security checks and provided they had not tried to enter the UK illegally.

Speaking at a press conference alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, Sir Keir said the plan would demonstrate that trying to make the Channel crossing would "be in vain".

He did not confirm how many people would be returned or accepted during the pilot.

Along a one-mile stretch of road near the centre of Newport, south Wales, 19 shops have been shut down in the past nine months for selling illegal tobacco and vapes.

"It's shameful that this is happening," Steve Hay, one of the Trading Standards team responsible for the closures, said.

He believes that the sale of illegal goods is a crime causing deep problems in the community.

Illegal cigarettes, tobacco and vape products were seized from 3,624 shops across England, Scotland and Wales in 2024-25, according to BBC Freedom of Information requests.

The Home Office said that "over 500 town centres are getting extra neighbourhood patrols" and that these would have a major role in cracking down on the sale of illegal tobacco products.
