Amid the Israel‑Iran war, explosions and missile activity were reported in and around Cyprus, where Britain’s strategic RAF bases are located, after the UK agreed to let the United States use some British bases for limited defensive action against Iranian missile threats. British Defence Secretary John Healey said two missiles were fired in the direction of Cyprus amid Iran’s retaliation for joint US‑Israeli strikes on Iran, though authorities believe they were not deliberately aimed at the island.

US President Donald Trump and his defence secretary have both heaped criticism on the UK and other allied countries for not being more involved in the war in Iran.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump called on the UK to "build up some delayed courage" and "take" the Strait of Hormuz, which has been mostly closed since the conflict began.

"You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us," Trump said.

"Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!"

Trump's sentiment was later echoed by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who urged other countries around the world to prepare "to step up" during a press conference at the Pentagon.

Hours later UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced more British troops are being sent to the Middle East to help allied countries defend themselves from Iranian attacks.

President Trump has said he is considering withdrawing the US from Nato, after the refusal of US allies to join the US-Israeli war against Iran.

In a Truth Social post, the US president also said Iran had requested a ceasefire, claiming the country’s “new regime president” had made the request, although he didn’t make clear who he was referring to. Iran’s foreign ministry denied the claim, calling it “false and baseless”.

Israel continued its waves of attacks on Iran, which has also launched missiles at Iraq and Israel.
