As the ruler of the ancient Egyptian race for 16,000 years, from 50,000 BC to 36,000 BC, it is believed that he was responsible for the progress of the barbarian people to a higher level of civilization. Thoth achieved immortality by being able to depart from life at will without dying. His knowledge allowed him to be the leader of the various Atlantean colonies, including those in Central and South America. Before he left Egypt, he is supposed to have built the Great Pyramid at Giza, which was mistakenly believed to be built by Cheops and to have placed guards chosen from the elite of his people to guard the entrance to the Great Halls of Amenti. There he hid his knowledge. The successors of these guardians later became the pyramid priests who revered Thoth as the god of wisdom.

‘Tis true without lying, certain & most true.
That which is below is like that which is above & that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing.
And as all things have been & arose from one by the mediation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation.
The Sun is its father, the moon its mother, the wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth is its nurse.
The father of all perfection in the whole world is here.
Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth.
Separate thou the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross sweetly with great industry.
It ascends from the earth to the heaven & again it descends to the earth & receives the force of things superior & inferior.
By this means you shall have the glory of the whole world
& thereby all obscurity shall fly from you.
Its force is above all force. For it vanquishes every subtle thing & penetrates every solid thing.
So was the world created.
From this are & do come admirable adaptations whereof the means (or process) is here in this. Hence I am called Hermes Trismegist, us having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world.

A lecture from Dr. Stephan Hoeller in honor of Manly P. Hall (March 18, 1901-August 29, 1990) on the importance of cultivating one's own philosophy of life.

"A mature philosophy of life originates in a natural thoughtfulness. To live without thinking is to fail in the proper use of the powers and faculties with which we have been endowed. To think without applying our thoughts to the conduct of our affairs is to substitute mere intellectualism for intelligence. It is seldom possible to perfect a personal philosophy without study, through which we become familiar with the deepest and noblest convictions of mankind. We must also call upon daily experience, by which we can convince ourselves of the reality and integrity of certain basic principles ever present and forever true. Beyond both study and experience are the internal faculties of the soul, and these must bestow final certitude upon our convictions. If, therefore, we live simply and wisely, seeking first the improvement of our inner lives, reserving an open heart and mind, we shall be guided and directed according to our needs and understanding."

About the speaker:
Stephan A. Hoeller was Manly P. Hall's principal lecturing associate at PRS for over 20 years. He is a noted scholar and lecturer on Gnosticism and the message of C.G. Jung. He is the author of five books and President of Besant Lodge of the Theosophical Society on Beachwood Drive in Hollywood.
