The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The Kybalion - The Principle of Correspondence - Hermetic teachings, Gnostic wisdom, Occult knowledge. The Principle of Correspondence "As above, so below; as below, so above." The Kybalion. This Principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life. The old Hermetic axiom ran in these words: "As above, so below; as below, so above." And the grasping of this Principle gives one the means of solving many a dark paradox, and hidden secret of Nature. There are planes beyond our knowing, but when we apply the Principle of Correspondence to them we are able to understand much that would otherwise be unknowable to us. This Principle is of universal application and manifestation, on the various planes of the material, mental, and spiritual universe--it is an Universal Law. Gnosticism came upon powerful and sustained assault beginning in the 2nd century, most famously by Irenaeus and in Five Book "On the Detection and Overthrow of the Falsely-Called Gnosis" better known as simply "Against Heresies." In fact, prior to the discovery of the Nag Hammadi Library in 1945, Irenaeus was our only real insight into these ancient gnostic spiritualities. With Irenaeus becoming a "Doctor of the Church" just this year (2022) and Gnosticism a more popular religious movement than ever let's explore this most ancient polemic against Gnosticism. Does Valentinus represent Gnosticism fairly? What are his exact religious and philosophical critiques? What can we learn about ancient Gnosticism and the proto-orthodoxy from his attack? How did this work earn him the title of "Doctor of the Church"?

The Gnostic gospels of the 2nd to 4th century AD have told us a lot about the scene of evolving ideas during the early Christian period.

The Gnostics emerged as a group that saw the world very differently from the view of orthodox Christianity, and the sheer complexity of the doctrine has kept scholars and theologians engaged to this day.

From the point of view of someone reading these texts now, I'd describe them as a really fascinating sequel to the Bible, complete with its own host of deities, cosmology, alternative back stories to biblical incidents, unheard of cryptic teachings by Jesus, and mystical, heavily metaphorical theology.

And what about the purpose of these writings? Are they secret codes awaiting to be deciphered, or just a relic of a past doctrine that once flourished?

In this video we take a look at some of the quite obscure teachings from five different Gnostic gospels.
