The ten hymns were recently chosen as the UK’s most popular by Songs of Praise viewers in an online vote and include three by living hymn-writers, each of whom takes part in the programme. But which one will be the UK’s favourite? A congregation of a thousand voices joins Aled, and there are special performances of hymns from all around the UK, including Katherine Jenkins and Wynne Evans singing in St. David’s Cathedral, Daniel O’ Donnell performing In Christ Alone on the coast of Northern Ireland, and Fairground Attraction’s Eddi Reader singing Amazing Grace on the coast of Scotland. The star of Hollywood blockbusters Black Panther and Venom, Sope Aluko, talks about her love of hymns and how much comfort she gains from them, and poet John Cooper Clarke and comedian Lloyd Griffith each talk about their own particular favourites.

James O'Donnell - Psalm 139
James O'Donnell - Psalm 139 121gamers 2 Views • 3 years ago

Service for the reception of Her Majesty The Queen's coffin at Westminster Hall
Choir of Westminster Abbey and the choir of His Majesty's Chapel Royal, St James's Palace
James O'Donnell (b 1961) Psalm 139: 1-18, 23-end

O LORD, thou hast searched me out, and known me:
thou knowest my down-sitting, and mine up-rising;

thou understandest my thoughts long before.
Thou art about my path, and about my bed :
and spiest out all my ways.

For lo, there is not a word in my tongue :
but thou, O Lord, knowest it altogether.

Thou hast fashioned me behind and before :
and laid thine hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful and excellent for me :
I cannot attain unto it.

Whither shall I go then from thy Spirit :
or whither shall I go then from thy presence?

If I climb up into heaven, thou art there :
if I go down to hell, thou art there also.

If I take the wings of the morning :
and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea;

even there also shall thy hand lead me :
and thy right hand shall hold me.

If I say, Peradventure the darkness shall cover me :
then shall my night be turned to day.

Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee,
but the night is as clear as the day :
the darkness and light to thee are both alike.

For my reins are thine :
thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

I will give thanks unto thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made :
marvellous are thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well.

My bones are not hid from thee :
though I be made secretly, and fashioned beneath in the earth.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect :
and in thy book were all my members written;

which day by day were fashioned :
when as yet there was none of them.

How dear are thy counsels unto me, O God :
O how great is the sum of them!

If I tell them, they are more in number than the sand :
when I wake up I am present with thee.

Try me, O God, and seek the ground of my heart :
prove me, and examine my thoughts.

Look well if there be any way of wickedness in me :
and lead me in the way everlasting.

GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Temptations and Four Tops competed in a "Battle of the Bands" style Motown 25 soul event at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, California in 1983. The only original or "Classic Five" Temptations performing were Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams, as Eddie Kendricks (who left the group in 1971) and David Ruffin (who left the group in 1968, and was replaced by Dennis Edwards) had a falling out with the group. Paul Williams (who also left the group in 1971) had died in 1973, and Al Bryant (who left the group and was replaced by Ruffin in 1964) had died in 1975.

Joining Williams and Franklin were then-Temptations Dennis Edwards, Richard Street, and Ron Tyson. All of the original members of the Four Tops performed: Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, and Lawrence Payton, with Levi Stubbs providing the lead vocals. The two groups performed "Reach Out I'll Be There","Baby I Need Your Loving", "Get Ready", "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", "My Girl" "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" and "I Can't Get Next to You", among other numbers. The joint performance was a success, and the Temptations and Four Tops toured together for two years following the Motown Records special. Source: Wikipedia

Update February 2, 2018: Former Temptations lead singer Dennis Edwards died in Chicago from meningitis on February 1, 2018 at age 74. RIP Dennis Edwards.

Motown 25 was remembered on Motown 60 A Grammy Celebration 2019 at Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles. The Motown 60th anniversary special event was broadcast on CBS.

The Four Tops - Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)

Lyrics:
Every day the sun comes up around her.
She can make the birds sing harmony.
Every drop of rain is glad it found her.
Heaven must have made her just for me.
When she smiles so warm and tender,
A sight for sore eyes to see.
Oooh, (ain't no woman like the one I've got.)
Oh, no, they don't come better.
(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
She don't ask for things, no diamond rings.
(So together, like a hand in glove.)
Like pages in a letter.
(Ain't no woman like the one I love.)
She can fill me up when it's down I'm goin' (I'm goin').
Put a little music in my day.
Wouldn't be surprised if my love keeps growin' (it keeps growin').
Bigger every minute that she stays away.
I would kiss the ground she walks on,
Cause it's my word, my word she'll obey, now.
Woo-ooh. (Ain't no woman like the one I've got.)
Well, I kiss the ground she walks on.
(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
She's a real good friend right to the end.
(So together like a hand in glove.)
A lonely man when she's gone.
(People, ain't no woman like the one I love.)
Oooh. What a good, good thing I've got.
She means to me a lot.
No, no, they don't come better.
(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
She don't ask for things, no diamond rings.
(So together, like a hand in glove.)
Like pages in a letter.
(Ain't no woman like the one I love, people.)
Well, I kiss the ground she walks on.
(To make her happy doesn't take a lot.)
I'm a lonely man when my baby's gone.

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy's legendary Motown made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, Teena Marie, their music communicated and brought together a racially divided country and segregated society, around the world, touching all people of all ages and races.
