Mold Release Options For Concrete Casting
You should always use a mold release of some kind when making concrete and mortar castings. There are mold release sprays for concrete available through mold and concrete supplies stores but they can be costly or not readily available in your area. There are a few things found in most homes that can be used as a concrete mold release.
In a pinch, WD-40 could be used but is not really an ideal product. It has a thin viscosity and contains chemicals to help penetrate rust. Also, it has quite a strong odor.
Cooking oil such as olive oil or vegetable oil found in almost every kitchen everywhere, is another DIY mold release option that can be used. It can be sprayed on or wiped on with a cloth but either way, be sure to remove excess oil so it does not compromise the finished product.
A combination of dishwashing liquid and isopropyl alcohol can be combined in a spray bottle and sprayed onto the surface of the mold, again wiping off any excess or pooling. The isopropyl alcohol dissipates and the detergent leaves a protective layer on the mold enabling an easier demolding.
Beeswax is another alternative concrete mold release agent. Apply with a stiff brush or cloth to your concrete mold making sure to get good coverage. Using a little heat to soften the beeswax helps it be a little easier to work with and apply.
When applying a mold release agent be sure to wipe up any spots with excess or pooling. If too much release agent is left on the mold it could affect the quality and finish of the concrete casting.
