Donald Trump has withdrawn his backing for Sir Keir Starmer’s Chagos Islands deal because he has not received UK approval to use its military bases for a US strike on Iran, it has been reported.
The US president attacked the agreement to hand sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius and lease back the Diego Garcia joint UK-US military base as “a big mistake”.
His latest U-turn on his previous support for the deal is because of the UK Government’s refusal to give the White House the green light to use the Diego Garcia base or RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire for a potential military campaign against Iran, according to the Times.

European leaders are raising the alarm over the unravelling of the Western alliance as President Trump continues to move further away from an old world order.
JD Vance told European leaders to get over their “crazy overreactions” to Trump’s designs on Greenland and work to improve the island’s security and UK ministers are concerned that Trump is cooling relations with Russia, increasing the possibility for new security threats on the continent.
Is the US-UK "special relationship" dead?

The White House has made its first comments since US President Donald Trump sparked a row by saying that NATO troops had stayed “a little back” off the front lines during the war in Afghanistan.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the words were "insulting and frankly appalling”.
Prince Harry, who served in Afghanistan, has called for the sacrifices of Nato soldiers to be "spoken about truthfully and with respect".
The White House's deputy press secretary said that Trump was right to have stressed that America's contribution to NATO dwarf those of other countries. There was no direct response to the outrage caused.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has insisted the UK will not join offensive action in Iran.
But - he has agreed to a US request to use British military bases for "defensive" strikes on Iranian missile sites.
It comes after a weekend of conflict, with the US and Israel launching widespread strikes on Saturday targeting Iran's missile infrastructure, military sites and senior leaders. Iran has responded by launching missiles and drones across the Middle East.
The UK prime minister said Britain had learned lessons from the "mistakes of Iraq", and was not involved in the initial strikes on Iran and "will not join offensive action now".

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended his decision not to permit the use of UK bases for the initial US-Israel strikes on Iran after US President Donald Trump criticised the UK's stance, saying the PM was “no Winston Churchill”.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has urged Starmer to go further, saying the UK has "became part of this, whether we liked it or not”.
“Why are we being dragged into a war without a plan?” A Question Time audience member asked the panel.

The US has seized a Russian-flagged vessel in the North Atlantic linked to Venezuelan oil.
It also said it had apprehended a second tanker in the Caribbean in the “back-to-back” boarding of two “ghost fleet” ships.
The UK military supported the US operation to seize the tanker in the Atlantic, the Marinera, with air surveillance and a navy ship, the Ministry of Defence has said.
Moscow has said the tanker was only temporarily flagged to Russia, and that "no state has the right to use force against vessels properly registered in other countries' jurisdictions”.

US President Donald Trump has said there have been "productive conversations" about a "complete and total resolution" to the conflict in the Middle East.
He said he will "postpone any and all strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure" for a five day period.
On Saturday night, Trump gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz - or, he said, the US would "obliterate" Iranian power plants, "starting with the biggest one first".

US President Donald Trump and his defence secretary have both heaped criticism on the UK and other allied countries for not being more involved in the war in Iran.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump called on the UK to "build up some delayed courage" and "take" the Strait of Hormuz, which has been mostly closed since the conflict began.
"You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us," Trump said.
"Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!"
Trump's sentiment was later echoed by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who urged other countries around the world to prepare "to step up" during a press conference at the Pentagon.
Hours later UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced more British troops are being sent to the Middle East to help allied countries defend themselves from Iranian attacks.

US President Donald Trump has said he is considering a limited military strike on Iran in order to pressure its leaders to agree a deal to curb the nuclear programme.
On Thursday, Trump said the world would find out "over the next, probably, 10 days" whether a deal would be reached or the US would take military action. The US has been increasing its military presence in the region in recent weeks.
The deployment includes the world's largest warship, USS Gerald R Ford, appearing to be heading towards the region.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the UK's decision not to join the US-Israeli strikes on Iran was “deliberate”.
The prime minister also said “the best way forward for the region and the world is a negotiated settlement” but he called Iran's response to the attacks "outrageous”.
It comes after the US and Israel struck Iran on Saturday, killing the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Israeli military has launched new strikes on Tehran.
Meanwhile, new Iranian strikes have been reported on a major gas plant in Qatar and in Saudi Arabia.

The United States President Donald Trump has rejected the United Kingdom's offer of military support in West Asia, despite the UK's decision to send two aircraft carriers to the region. Trump told UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer that the US does not need UK support anymore, stating they don't need people involved when they've already won. The UK has deployed HMS Dragon and Wildcat helicopters to the region and sent F-35s to the Cyprus base for defensive purposes. Earlier, the UK had stated it would not get directly involved in the war or launch offensive strikes, and that its bases could only be used for defence. This hesitation reportedly upset Trump. The US president claims his country is already winning and has received strong support from Israel. The tensions follow ongoing discussions about Diego Garcia bases and the use of UK facilities by US forces.
