His Truth Is Marching on: John Lewis and the Power of Hope by Jon Meacham, John Lewis Book Review
John Lewis was an unlikely hero in American history. Born to poor sharecroppers in rural Alabama, he became determined to overturn the injustices of the Jim Crow South. Throughout the 1960s, he and other activists in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee staged a series of nonviolent protests, marches, and sit-ins to push for equal rights. His efforts helped secure the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He continued his work throughout his long career as a US Representative, fighting for justice until the very end.

In a historic step, The Kansas City Star, one of the most influential newspapers in the Midwest, has apologized for the paper’s racist history. The paper’s top editor, Mike Fannin, admitted the Star and a sister paper had reinforced segregation, Jim Crow laws and redlining, and “robbed an entire community of opportunity, dignity, justice and recognition” with its biased coverage over many decades. We speak with Fannin and Mará Rose Williams, a longtime education writer at the paper who led the effort to examine the newspaper’s coverage of the Black community following the police killing of George Floyd and the nationwide racial justice uprising this year. “Mainstream newspapers across the country, not just The Kansas City Star, have not done a good job of covering the Black community,” says Williams.

The Non-Truth: Accounts of the Indonesian Political Exiles in Europe by Dr Soe Tjen Marching was recorded on 25th October 2022. Further details: https://www.soas.ac.uk/about/e....vent/non-truth-accou
This seminar will discuss Indonesian political exiles (in relation to the 1965 genocide in Indonesia) who now reside in Europe. “Truth and reconciliation” have become very important notions in confronting issues relating to manipulated history and human rights abuses in the context of the 1965 genocide. Many activists in Indonesia have emphasised that reconciliation will not take place without recognition of the truth. However, interviews carried out by Dr. Marching concerning the events of 1965 in Indonesia revealed many inconsistencies in respective accounts of the genocide. Does this phenomenon confirm the postmodern theory that "there is no truth"? And if there is no truth, how do we approach the activists’ and survivors’ demands for the truth?

In 1996 California voters passed Proposition 215, allowing physicians to recommend marijuana for medical purposes. Last October the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that doctors have a constitutional right to discuss marijuana with patients. Refusing to accept the will of the electorate, the federal government is fighting back. In January, prosecutors secured a drug conviction against Ed Rosenthal by suppressing key information at trial that he had been deputized by the City of Oakland to distribute medical marijuana. Upon learning this, the public was outraged and members of the jury disavowed their verdict. However, instead of a possible 60 years, Rosenthal was sentenced to only one day in prison, and a victory was declared for medical marijuana. Not to be discouraged, the Department of Justice has since asked the Supreme Court to allow it to punish doctors who recommend marijuana, and the DEA continues to raid and close down clinics.
Will the federal government stop the use of medical marijuana? Can the American people stop the federal government? What is the truth about the medicinal benefits and social impact of marijuana, and why does the government continue to oppose any and all drug decriminalization? This Independent Policy Forum assembles several of the foremost experts in medicine, drug policy, and journalism to discuss the past, present, and future of medical marijuana and the war on drugs.
ED ROSENTHAL, noted activist and best-selling author, is a key figure in the medical marijuana movement. In 30 years of study and writing, he has become a trusted expert on marijuana use and social policy. He is co-author of the book Why Marijuana Should Be Legal and has written over a dozen other books on the subject. Mr. Rosenthal presents a clear and concise analysis of the effects of marijuana and marijuana laws on society.
DONALD I. ABRAMS, M.D., is Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California st San Francisco and one of the leading researchers of medical marijuana. He is also Assistant Director of the AIDS Program at San Francisco General Hospital and since 1981 has been involved in several landmark studies on HIV and AIDS. He has conducted clinical trials of marijuana since 1997, with grants from the National Institute of Health.
EDWIN DOBB is Contributing Editor at Harper's magazine. His writings on civil liberties have been published in Harper's, Amnesty Now and San Francisco magazine. He was formerly Senior Editor of The Sciences, writes for the New York Times Magazine and is a visiting lecturer for the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley.
ROBERT J. MacCOUN is Professor of Law and Public Policy at the Richard and Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and is co-author of the book Drug War Heresies. He was formerly a behavioral scientist at the Institute for Civil Justice and the Drug Policy Research Center at the RAND Corporation. He is one of the world's foremost experts on drug policy.

We show how to design protocols that resist attackers with remote attestation, including both completely cryptographic methods such as on-line deniable key establishment (that work against some adversaries and as adopted by the upcoming OTRv4) and methods that use TEEs (which can stop it completely).

The Tudors King required a new marriage and Queen. Hans Holbein had been sent across the royal courts of Europe to paint a good likeness of potential ladies for Henry VIII. Many of the women were disinterested in Henry due to his colourful marital background. It was around now that Anne of Cleves made her first appearance. Her portrait is pleasant and appealing except to one man, the man that matters most, Henry! So why did Henry marry Anne at first sight? Was it purely based on Cromwell's determination to provide new alliances in Europe to strengthen the English say in matters, or was it simply Holbein's portrait and Henry's first view of his new bride the cause behind one of the most daring matchups in Tudor times?

Welcome to Goto 10 for a thought-provoking talk about what democracy is all about in an age of fake news and post-truth. Based on recent research, Johan Farkas urges for the need to make space for popular dispute, difference and agonistic confrontations to uphold democratic traditions and institutions.
Democracies are currently under siege, as fake news are flooding social media and post-truth sentiments roam throughout society. This dystopian narrative has come to dominate political agendas across the globe. To save democracy – a number of voices argue – radical measures are needed. Indeed, for many, truth must be restored at all cost. In this talk, Johan Farkas critically examines contemporary post-truth discourses by honing in on and challenging their democratic underpinnings.
Through extensive analyses of scholarly and journalistic publications, the talk unpacks how post-truth discourses presuppose a certain normative idea of what democracy is and ought to be. Not only is democracy configured as a static construct in these discourses, it is also equated very narrowly with evidence-based decision-making and truth-telling practices. Engaging with critical political philosophy, Farkas highlights how these democratic imaginaries neglect how democracy has never been about truth, evidence and rationality alone. It is equally about the voice of the democratic people. By neglecting this cornerstone of the democratic tradition, post-truth discourses reproduce and strengthen a risky vision of democracy – one in which consensus and rationality dominate over civic voices and popular dispute. By doing so, contemporary post-truth discourses – and the solutions they contain – might end up deepening existing democratic problems.
What we need now – perhaps more than ever – is not simply more truth, but more politics proper. We need to fortify our democratic institutions by once again making space for popular dispute, difference and agonistic confrontations.
The talk is based Farkas’ new book, Post-Truth, Fake News and Democracy: Mapping the Politics of Falsehood, written with Jannick Schou and published by Routledge: https://www.routledge.com/Post....-Truth-Fake-News-and
About the Speaker – Johan Farkas

Farkas has published on these topics in international journals such as New Media & Society, Social Media + Society, and Critical Discourse Studies. His debut book, Post-Truth, Fake News and Democracy: Mapping the Politics of Falsehood (with Jannick Schou) was published by Routledge in September 2019. The book presents a detailed analysis of contemporary discourses of fake news and post-truth, offering both a trenchant critique and call for more inclusive forms of democracy. This event is part of Your Data Your Democracy, a series of events focusing on issues related to the internet, society, and democracy. Through these events, the Swedish Internet Foundation works to open up the conversation between different actors to shine light on these issues though various perspectives.

The talk will look at key themes to understand our daily relationship with technology and more broadly the role of technology in society, emphasizing both changes and historical continuity. The following topics will be addressed, challenging widespread stereotypes in contemporary public discourse about technology:
How technology changes us
Why technology is not neutral
The reason not only digital technology matters
Why society and politics are often displaced by technology
