▶️How Ball Mills Work
The following process description is based upon a ball mill used in the hard rock mining industry for liberating minerals from ore, but the operating principle for ball mills used in other industries is the same.
Crushed ore is fed to the ball mill through the inlet; a scoop (small screw conveyor) ensures the feed is constant.
For both wet and dry ball mills, the ball mill is charged to approximately 33% with balls (range 30-45%). Pulp (crushed ore and water) fills another 15% of the drum’s volume so that the total volume of the drum is 50% charged. Pulp is usually 75% solid (crushed ore) and 25% water; pulp is also known as ‘slurry’.
An electric motor is used to rotate the ball mill. As the ball mill rotates, the balls ‘stick’ to the inner surface of the drum due to the centrifugal force created within the drum. At a certain angle, the weight of the balls overcomes the centrifugal force holding them against the drum and they begin to tumble back to the centre line of the ball mill (this area is known as the ‘toe’). In this manner, the ore is reduced in size by both attrition (ore rubbing against other bits of ore) and impact (balls impacting with the ore).
The ore moves gradually through the mill then exits through the discharge port. The discharge port may be covered by a grate to prevent oversized ore exiting the mill, or it may have no grate (overflow type ball mill).
As the balls wear due to abrasion, they are replaced with new balls (‘green’ balls).

The raw material is lifted by the elevator to the raw material bin and then sent to the ball mill through the weighing belt machine. The material is ground in the ball mill by the continuous impact of the grinding media. The pulverized powder enters the classifier with the airflow for grading. The graded fine powder enters the high pressure pulse type dust collector together with the airflow, the fine powder is collected and the clean air is discharged. The qualified finished product is discharged to the finished product bin for storage; the rejected coarse powder returns to the feed end of the ball mill and enters the ball mill together with the raw material for regrinding.

Hello everyone, today I will show you how I made a ball mill.
It's a simple grinding tool used in pyrotechnics making. It consist of a spinning plastic jar that contains steel or glass beeds.
It's used to mix and grind chemicals.
BE CARREFUL if you use a ball mill like this, never put any composition containing metalic fuel. it can create sparks and ignite your mix !!
This project is mainly made of scrap PVC pipes.
I made a lot of try to find the right motor and I ended up using a drill motor because it's rotation speed was ideal.
This project took me about 10 hours to realise.
I hope you enjoyed the video :)

Making black powder at http://www.fireworksmaking.com. Learn how to make black powder, rockets, aerial shells and other types of fireworks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3L93yBwjxA
Sooner or later just about every pyro discovers that they have to be able to make good quality black powder. It's too expensive to buy commercial black powder, plus they can't get all the different types they need.
BP is used is almost every firework you can possibly make. For aerial shells in particular it is used for burst charge and for the lift charge.
It's getting harder and harder to find BP in retail stores, and as we mentioned before you can't get all the different variations you need to make fireworks.
Plus if you're a do-it-yourself pyro, then you want to DO IT YOURSELF.
This video describes a simple technique for creating high quality, predictable black powder every single time. BP produced using this method is as good or better than any commercial product you can get your hands on.
There is one critical piece of machinery that is an absolute must-have if you want to make black powder that has enough punch for any job. You need a ball mill. The directions in this video are based on your having access to one of these simple machines.
It is the use of a ball mill that gives our BP the kind of power we required. Using a ball mill for our black powder makes sure that we have very fine, small particles. After going through the ball mill, the chemicals are very intimately mixed together. Having this quality mix is key if we want BP with proper speed and power.

In today's video I'll share 3 typs that will help you get better results with your Ball mill, they are simple to do and make, but can increese your results when milling something in Ball mill. I've made this video so you can try them by yourself and see do they work for you or not. I have one question. Do you want my next video to be about how I made MY BALL MILL from an old cooling Fan? Let me know in the comments below. I hope this video help you get better job done with your Ball mill.
Thank you for watching this video!
Peace.
