In the Conservatives' first policy announcement of the general election campaign, Rishi Sunak said on Saturday he would introduce a new form of mandatory National Service for 18-year-olds if his party wins the vote in July.

Under the proposed policy, the Tories say 18-year-olds would be given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year.

UK Parliament has passed PM Rishi Sunak's flagship Rwanda bill, after a late-night sitting and months of wrangling.

Plans to send some asylum seekers to Africa have met with fierce criticism, but the bill passed on Monday when the Lords dropped their opposition.

Sunak said in a statement "nothing will stand in our way" now of getting flights off the ground.

But the scheme could still be held up by challenges in the courts.

Moscow on Monday said it that it could launch strikes at British military targets inside Ukraine and elsewhere if Kyiv's forces used British-supplied long-range missiles to strike Russia. The statement issued by the Russian foreign ministry came after British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said during a visit to Ukraine that Kyiv "absolutely has the right to strike back at Russia". Britain's coasts are littered with shipwrecks, meaning thousands of haunting artefacts and in some cases - lucrative treasure - are resting on the sea floor.

Up to 300 items were found in 2023, a BBC Freedom of Information request revealed.

A 200-year-old elephant tusk, coins from the Spanish Armada, plane parts, iron swords and a jar of Marmite were among the items found and reported to the Receiver of Wreck last year.

Human bones, mammoth bones and a French-made 2.5 tonne 17th Century bronze cannon were also on the list.

Labour has denied reports it's offering peerages to former MPs so it can parachute so-called "Starmtroopers" - Keir Starmer's chosen candidates - into their seats. Britain’s defence chief, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, doesn't believe another world war is on the horizon.

Ahead of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, he spoke about the comparisons made between WW2 and the conflict in Ukraine and told Sky News he is confident we are not heading towards another world war.

He said: "Putin does not want a war with NATO. Putin does not want a nuclear war. And we have enormous overmatch because of the strength of NATO."

China has accused the UK’s intelligence agency of recruiting a couple as spies.

According to China’s Ministry of State Security, the two state department employees were successfully recruited after MI6 operatives exploited the man’s “strong desire for money”.

China did not reveal how it uncovered the case involving Mr Wang and Ms Zhou, saying only that it came after a "thorough investigation".

The case is still under investigation and Chinese officials did not say if the couple would be charged.

The BBC has contacted the UK authorities for a response.
