Councils across England are poised to take legal action to remove asylum seekers from hotels in their areas.

It comes after the High Court granted a district council a temporary injunction to block asylum seekers from lodging at The Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex.

Thousands of people have protested near the hotel in recent weeks after an asylum seeker living there was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the town.

Now, all 12 councils controlled by Reform UK will "do everything in their power to follow Epping's lead", the party's leader Nigel Farage said. A Conservative-run council in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, also said it is considering taking similar action.

Border Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle said the government will "continue working with local authorities and communities to address legitimate concerns".

Sir Keir Starmer faces mounting pressure over the small boats crisis after protests continued outside asylum hotels and a poll suggested voters thought he was failing to grip the problem.

The Prime Minister and his government have set out measures to speed up the asylum appeals system to aid the removal of people with no right to be in the UK.

But Labour former home secretary Lord Blunkett said the Government had so far failed to offer a “comprehensive answer or an understandable narrative” on tackling the crisis.

So far this year a record 28,076 people have crossed the English Channel in small boats, 46% more than in the same period in 2024.

Protests at sites housing asylum seekers continued over the weekend and the Government is braced for further legal fights over the use of hotels.

LATEST: Met Police have arrested a total of 423 people so far at Notting Hill Carnival, confirming two people have been stabbed during the festivities. The number of arrests on Monday was 223, with 177 at the Carnival itself and 46 on the approaches to the event. Some 200 people were arrested on Sunday, with 149 at the event and 51 on their way to the Carnival.

The UK's seas have had their warmest start to the year since records began, helping to drive some dramatic changes in marine life and for its fishing communities.

The average surface temperature of UK waters in the seven months to the end of July was more than 0.2C higher than any year since 1980, BBC analysis of provisional Met Office data suggests.

Scientists and amateur naturalists have observed a remarkable range of species not usually widespread in UK waters, including octopus, bluefin tuna and mauve stinger jellyfish.

The abundance of these creatures can be affected by natural cycles and fishing practices, but many researchers point to the warming seas as a crucial part of their rise.
