Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor appears to have knowingly shared confidential information with Jeffrey Epstein when, as Prince Andrew, he was a UK trade envoy.
Emails seen by the BBC from the recently released Epstein files show Mr Mountbatten-Windsor apparently passing on details of investment and trade opportunities to the convicted sex offender.
The emails were sent in 2010, at a time when Andrew later claimed he had cut off contact with Epstein. Official guidance says trade envoys have a duty of confidentiality, with sensitive commercial or political information.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been contacted for comment by the BBC but has not responded.
Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Andy Verity.

The murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, and his treatment by police in the moments before his death, have sparked a backlash in Britain.
Newly released video shows that Mr Nowak, who was white, was handcuffed and arrested as he lay dying - despite telling officers he had been stabbed and couldn't breathe. His killer, Sikh man Vickrum Digwa, had falsely accused him of a racist attack.
The BBC's political correspondent Rob Watson tells us that the case has provoked a debate about race and policing in the UK.
Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing populist Reform Party, has claimed Mr Nowak's death was evidence of "anti-white prejudice" and "two-tier policing", suggesting that the British public react with "pure, cold rage". Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged calm, and accused Mr Farage of exploiting the murder to create "grievance and division". He has also said the police face "serious questions".
On Tuesday, at least 11 police officers were injured in clashes with protestors near the site of the murder.
Hampshire Police Chief Constable Alexis Boon has said the force is "sorry for handcuffing and arresting Henry", and that an investigation by the police watchdog will aim to understand the officers' actions.

Red heat alerts have been issued in the UK, France, Spain and other nations across western and central Europe as heatwave conditions are forecast to intensify in the coming days with highs of more than 40C.
Day time temperatures are due to hit 40C this week in France and in Spain temperatures are set to peak above 40C in some areas.
Meanwhile, the UK and Germany are both bracing for its hottest June day on record, with temperatures forecast to rise above 35C in the UK and 40C in Germany.
The rising temperatures are being driven by hot air moving north from the Sahara desert, which is in turn trapping hot air over the affected areas, with forecasters suggesting the conditions could result in one of the longest heatwaves in recent years.

France has recorded its hottest day since records began in 1947, breaking a record set a day earlier, as an early summer heatwave grips western Europe. France’s national temperature indicator - an average of day and night temperatures across dozens of locations - hit 30C, up from 29.8C a day earlier.
In the UK a red heat alert is in place for large areas of England, with a temperature of 36.1C recorded in Hampshire, the highest ever recorded in June. Forecasters predict temperatures could soon hit 38C.
The heatwave has caused deaths and serious disruption, particularly in France, Spain and Italy and is spreading to other parts of western Europe, with a new orange alert for dangerous weather in place for parts of the Netherlands.
Temperatures are expected to peak in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany in the next few days, with the heatwave also forecast to affect eastern Europe, where severe heat warnings have been issued in Poland, Croatia and Hungary.
Climate change is driving up temperatures around the world - but particularly in Europe - which some experts believe is heating up twice as fast as the global average.

Today is now officially the hottest ever June day, breaking the 1976 record.
A temperature of 35.7C has been recorded in Charlwood, Surrey, according to the Met Office.
This year marks half a century since the 1976 heatwave: a summer when people put foil over windows to keep out the sun and were forced to use standpipes in the street as water supplies ran short.
The UK's all-time high is 40.3C, recorded in July 2022.

Andy Burnham has reacted to Keir Starmer's resignation, and confirmed that he will try to replace him as Labour leader and prime minister.
"His decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is conducted in an orderly and responsible way. I will put myself forward as part of this process”, Burnham said on social media.
While Starmer had been vowing to fight any leadership challenge, the tone shifted after Andy Burnham beat Reform UK in the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, and he announced his resignation on Monday morning.
Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said he will back Burnham’s bid.
