His dad drove him to open mic nights in Dublin. His mom encouraged him to study music at university. Both gave him the green light when it came to busking in the streets of Ireland and the US. No one was really standing in the way of Dermot Kennedy moving forward with his tunes, and confidence is something the singer always had in his back pocket. It was bolstered when Glen Hansard gave him a thumbs up and his phone number. When Kennedy's 'Without Fear' debut arrived in 2019 his various supporters were proven right: here was a sizable talent to be shared with the world. "Giants," "Power Over Me," and "Outnumbered" made an impact. He was on his way. Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Tiny Desk - dude played everywhere, and was nominated for a 2020 BRIT award. Then he moved to New York to make his 'Sonder' follow-up and it worked out well because Gotham is a place where he was reminded to "have empathy and be conscious of other people's struggles and triumphs." Indeed, that's pretty much what the term 'sonder' means: an awareness of the lives being lived around you. His sophomore disc hit last November, and we finally got Kennedy into our UK studio to roll through some of its gems.
