Dermot Kennedy - “My good friend Brendan Canty has made this short film about my set at Electric Picnic last year. The best live moment I’ve ever had. Singing these songs to a sea of people at home meant so much. I hope you enjoy this X”

Brendan Canty – ‘’Dermot Kennedy playing the mainstage at Electric Picnic 2019 was a monumental homecoming show for him. A landmark moment that underlined how far he has risen in just a couple of years - from busking on the streets of Dublin to playing to 20,000 people hanging off every word.

To mark the occasion, I was commissioned to make a narrative film featuring Dermot’s performance at Electric Picnic. I wanted to capture the youthful euphoria of a first festival experience - the magical highs, disappointments and redemptions between friends.

I cast two of the best young actors in Ireland in Jordanne Jones and Lauryn Canny, and with the best crew known to man and only one day of access, we somehow pulled this off - and I’m super proud of it!’’

With the new album, Sonder, Dermot Kennedy admits he’s never related to a word more. Sonder, “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own,” encapsulates universal themes of love, loss & hope, with the platinum-selling artist evolving into an even more expressive and powerful storyteller

Lyrics:

Where do we go from here? Something came in with the night
Snow came in heavy, my boys and me wandering blind (yeah)
Well, it's temporary darling
Now that bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan heard all our lines
Meant what I said, I want all of this all of the time
Ooh when I'm gone
At the dune with the dawn
Well that's all I could want
We were young
We were free, come on now, let it go
We were young
We were free
I was living in the cold, I'm coming home
Perfect line to open with
Her heart was never meant for this
Ooh we're never over it
We were young
We were free (yeah yeah)
All that she said to me stays with me, never to die
Held me brand new in the silence that went through the pines
Like I said already darling, I don't want you looking back at all the ghosts left behind
Know you'll stay near me so road remains hopeful this time
We were young
We were free, come on now, let it go
We were young
We were free
I was living in the cold, I'm coming home
Perfect line to open with
Her heart was never meant for this
Ooh we're never over it
We were young
We were free (yeah yeah)
Keep it another fortnight, keep it another fortnight
All I'll ever know, baby we were bound to burn
Keep it another fortnight, keep it another fortnight
All I'll ever know, baby we were bound to burn
Baby we were bound to burn
We were young
We were free, come on now, let it go
We were young
We were free
I was living in the cold, I'm coming home
Perfect line to open with
Her heart was never meant for this
Ooh we're never over it
We were young
We were free (yeah yeah)
Oh, when I'm gone
At the dune with the dawn
Well that's all I could want

Lyrics:
Better days are comin'
If no one told you
I hate to hear you cryin'
Over the phone, dear
For seven years runnin'
You've been a soldier
But better days are comin'
Better days are comin' for you
So when the night feels like forever
(Mh-mh)
I'll remember what you said to me
I know you've been hurtin'
Waitin' on a train that just won't come
The rain, it ain't permanent
And soon, we'll be dancin' in the sun
We'll be dancin' in the sun
And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)
And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)
We never miss the flowers
Until the sun's down
We never count the hours
Until they're runnin' out
You're on the other side of the storm now
You should be so proud
And better days are comin'
Better days are comin' for you
So when the night feels like forever
(Mh-mh)
I'll remember what you said to me
I know you've been hurting (is our time ever soothing?)
Waiting on a train that just won't come
The rain, it ain't permanent (is our time ever soothing?)
And soon, we'll be dancing in the sun
We'll be dancing in the sun
And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)
And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)
And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)
And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)
Your story's gonna change
Just wait for better days
You've seen too much of pain
Now, you don't even know
That your story's gonna change
Just wait for better days
I promise you, I won't let go
I know you've been hurting
Waiting on a train that just won't come
The rain, it ain't permanent (is our time ever soothing?)
And soon, we'll be dancing in the sun
We'll be dancing in the sun
And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)

President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer for blocking the use of Diego Garcia base to carry out strikes on Iran. This comes despite the UK allowing America to use multiple bases and ports to attack Iran and backing the joint military operation of America and Israel on Iran in principle. Diego Garcia is located in the Chagos Islands, which has been at the centre of a territorial dispute between Mauritius and the UK. The International Court ruled in favour of Mauritius, and the UK formally agreed to the handover of Chagos. Trump had previously objected to this handover, stating the UK had no right to do so as Diego Garcia hosts one of America's most important bases. The base is maintained by the United Kingdom, though maintenance is funded by the United States.

The prime minister has changed his mind about allowing the US to launch some attacks on Iran from British bases.

The UK is now involved in the US war against Iran, so does that mean there’s a greater chance of the Iranians attacking Britain? And what about British forces in the Middle East?

Sky's security and defence editor Deborah Haynes reports on the UK's contribution to the war.

Nigel Farage has accused the BBC of political bias after claims he has effectively been blocked from appearing on Desert Island Discs. A new biography says some staff feared his presence would make them feel “unsafe”, while others were allegedly worried about backlash from guests. Farage said the row was more proof of BBC bias, but the broadcaster denied banning him and insisted guest choices are made on editorial grounds over time. The latest clash adds to Farage’s long-running feud with the BBC over what he sees as its anti-Reform and anti-Right mindset.

Mark Dolan speaks with former Met police detective Peter Bleksley and former Tory MP Neil Parish.

The US "should be wary of being dragged back into a quagmire", the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned, as US President Donald Trump's plan to free ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz threatens the US-Iran ceasefire.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Monday that Iran would be "blown off the face of the Earth" if the country attacks US vessels during "Project Freedom".

But Iran insists that it controls the strait and on Monday fired missiles and drones at military and commercial ships, according to the US.

South Korea and the UAE reported damage to commercial ships, while a reported Iranian attack caused a fire at a UAE oil depot.

Around 2,000 ships are estimated to be stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.

A leaked Pentagon email suggests the US could withdraw support for Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands as punishment for not backing America's war in Iran.

The memo outlines potential pressure tactics against NATO allies who haven't supported the US-Israel operation, with the Falklands threat described as leverage against the UK government.

US President Donald Trump has said there have been "productive conversations" about a "complete and total resolution" to the conflict in the Middle East.

He said he will "postpone any and all strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure" for a five day period.

On Saturday night, Trump gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz - or, he said, the US would "obliterate" Iranian power plants, "starting with the biggest one first".

US President Donald Trump and his defence secretary have both heaped criticism on the UK and other allied countries for not being more involved in the war in Iran.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump called on the UK to "build up some delayed courage" and "take" the Strait of Hormuz, which has been mostly closed since the conflict began.

"You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us," Trump said.

"Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!"

Trump's sentiment was later echoed by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who urged other countries around the world to prepare "to step up" during a press conference at the Pentagon.

Hours later UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced more British troops are being sent to the Middle East to help allied countries defend themselves from Iranian attacks.

A controversial new framework could see the United States control parts of Greenland under a model similar to the UK’s sovereign military bases in Cyprus. Agreed in principle during talks between US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, the proposal would reportedly designate US base zones as American territory, allowing military operations, intelligence activity, and even access to rare earth minerals without Danish approval. While Trump hails the idea as a major national security win, critics warn it amounts to sovereignty by stealth. With Greenlanders skeptical and Europe uneasy, the deal raises explosive questions about power, borders, and control in the Arctic.

Sir Keir Starmer and Donald Trump have spoken for the first time since the US president angrily criticised the UK's Iran response.

On Saturday, the US president said the UK was considering sending aircraft carriers to the Middle East but dismissed the prospect, writing on social media "we don't need people that join Wars after we've already won!" - while labelling Britain "our once great ally".

Sir Keir has previously said the UK would not join offensive actions, but agreed to let the US use British bases for defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites.

Meanwhile, a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts says it has reached a consensus on who wil replace Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but some "obstacles" remain in the appointment.
