The US and Iran have traded strikes, as negotiations to extend their ceasefire drag on without a resolution. On Monday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted an air base used by US forces. It also threatened to open "new fronts" in the conflict, and keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, in response to Israel's offensive in Lebanon.

So how great a threat does Iran's military pose to the US and its allies, after more than three months of war?

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Iran's forces have been "decimated". But new analysis by the BBC has found that Iran has damaged at least 20 US military sites across the Middle East since the start of the war - suggesting the attacks are more extensive than publicly acknowledged. Using cheap drones, Iran has targeted American military equipment worth millions of dollars including THAAD batteries.

Iranian forces have also reportedly reopened several missile sites damaged early in the conflict.

We ask Merlyn Thomas from BBC Verify and Parham Ghobadi from BBC Persian about Iran's military capacity and what it means for the chances of a deal between Washington and Tehran.

Keir Starmer has been warned that the longer the conflict with Iran goes on then “the more likely the impact on our economy”.

The Prime Minister made the comments on Monday while meeting with members of the public as the war in the Middle East rages into its tenth day.

It comes as Sir was accused of wrecking Britain’s “special relationship” with the US after Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on the PM accusing him of trying to “join wars after we’ve already won.”

The pair had a phone call on Sunday night in a bid to repair fraught relations

Both nations have now authorised defensive use of their bases, reinforced air defences and vowed to protect their 200,000-plus citizens and troops in the region without committing to full-scale offensive operations.

Two men have been jailed after a man died as they drove at more than 100mph in what police have called "one of the most extreme dangerous driving cases" officers have ever seen.

Uways Hussain and Usmaan Mahmood filmed themselves travelling at more than a 100mph on residential roads in Burnage, South Manchester, before smashing into Sylvester Abayomi's car as he drove to work in March.

The pair had earlier been seen on CCTV inhaling nitrous oxide before then spending the night racing through the streets and running red lights at more than four-times the speed limit, reaching 139mph just seconds before the fatal crash.

Driver Hussain and his passenger Mahmood were then recorded on an apple watch, which had automatically called emergency services in the moments after the collision, making plans to flee the scene and cover up evidence.

Both have now been jailed for a total of more than 24 years after Hussain admitted causing death by dangerous driving, while Mahmood admitted aiding and abetting the same charge.

It is believed it is one of the first times a passenger has been convicted of such a charge.

Jailing them, Judge Nicholas Dean KC said their driving was "deliberate risk-taking, seemingly for the thrill of it".

“It was a sustained, deliberate and escalating course of highly dangerous conduct over a prolonged period," he said.

“I have seen CCTV images and video recordings on phones and they are terrifying.

“You drove at extreme speeds, seemingly up to very nearly 140mph, on roads which were by and large subject to 30mph speed limits, far, far in excess of any safe or lawful limit.”

Manchester Crown Court heard Hussain, 20, and Mahmood, 23, set out in the VW Golf GTI belonging to Mahmood, which neither were insured to drive, at around 11pm on 8 March.

As they stopped for petrol to continue their racing they were seen on CCTV inhaling from a balloon filled with Class C drug Nitrous Oxide.

The pair then recorded a series of videos on their phones throughout the night showing them weaving in and out of traffic, regularly hitting speeds of more than 100mph.

But as they raced down Kingsway the pair jumped a red light, smashing into 50-year-old Sylvester Abayomi - known as Syll - who worked as a delivery driver, leaving him with fatal injuries.

Despite the crash Hussain and Mahmood continued driving, reversing down the road before parking up, unaware the crash had triggered Hussain’s Apple watch and called the emergency services who were recording their conversation.

Hussain was heard asking Mahmood to "call an uber" to get them away, before the pair discussed if Syll was dead and making a plan to tell police the car had been stolen.

Judge Dean described the transcript of the call as “chilling”, adding: “It doesn’t reveal shock or concern for the victim.”

CCTV from a nearby shop also showed the duo removing nitrous oxide canisters from the back of the car.

The pair, who were still being tracked by their Apple watch, were arrested shortly afterwards after fleeing the scene.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker and lead negotiator, has accused the US of breaching its ceasefire with Iran, including by continuing its blockade of Iranian ports and failing to restrain its ally Israel from escalating attacks in Lebanon.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry has condemned and denounced “the heinous and repeated Iranian attacks” on the Gulf country as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has struck a base it says was used for an attack on its Sirik Island.
US President Donald Trump says he is close to a “very good deal” with Iran as US media report he is pushing for tougher terms.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the exchange of messages with the US is ongoing but nothing is certain until a deal is finalised.
President Trump continued to voice optimism for diplomacy early Monday, saying "Iran really wants to make a deal." He urged critics to "sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end."
His comments on Truth Social came after the U.S. military said a new round of "self-defense strikes" targeted Iranian radar and drone sites. Central Command called it a response to "aggressive Iranian actions" including shooting down another American drone.
Iran says it retaliated for what it labeled another U.S. ceasefire violation by targeting the "airbase from which the attack originated." U.S. ally Kuwait confirmed the interception of incoming missile and drone fire.

Discussions between the Trump administration and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continued in Berlin Monday, after the U.S. side said a "lot of progress" had been made on ending Russia’s war in Ukraine.

In her first public speech as chief of the U.K.’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), however, has cast her doubts that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the same.

“Russia is testing us in the gray zone with tactics that are just below the threshold of war. It's important to understand their attempts to bully, fearmonger and manipulate because it affects us all,” she added, warning of continuous, “aggressive” threats coming out of Moscow.

Among those threats, the MI6 head noted cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, airspace violations with drones, propaganda and influence operations, as well as “aggressive activity” in the ocean.

The White House has said President Trump is considering using the US military to acquire Greenland. It said that doing so was a “national security priority” for his administration and it is considering a range of options to secure that goal.

Donald Trump recently stated that the US "needed" Greenland – a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark – for security reasons. He has repeatedly insisted that it must come under US control.

The latest White House statement came shortly after European leaders rallied behind Denmark, whose Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has warned that any attack by the US on Greenland would spell the end of Nato. Under the rules of the military alliance allies are expected to go to each other's aid in case of external attacks.

Six European leaders backed Denmark in a joint statement which said: "Greenland belongs to its people, and only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters concerning their relations." The leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain stressed they were as keen as the US to ensure Arctic security and said it must be achieved by NATO allies acting collectively. They called for "upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders".

The European leaders held their urgent talks about Greenland while meeting in Paris to discuss the future of Ukraine and hopes of a peace agreement there. The UK and France signed a declaration of intent to deploy forces to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal.

The latest suggestions by the US administration that it could acquire Greenland by force come just days after a US military assault on Venezuela, the seizure of its President Nicolas Maduro and a declaration that the country would be run by Washington. Recent national security policy from the Trump administration states its intention to ensure US domination of the “western hemisphere”, including central and south America and the western Arctic.

Speaking in a statement posted to social media, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says the UK will allow US to use bases to attack missile sites in Iran.

Britain has so far not been involved in the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, and is reported to have previously refused American requests to use UK bases for operations against the country.

But in a statement on Sunday night, the Prime Minister said he had granted the request “to prevent Iran firing missiles across the region, killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk, and hitting countries that have not been involved”.

President Trump has said he is considering withdrawing the US from Nato, after the refusal of US allies to join the US-Israeli war against Iran.

In a Truth Social post, the US president also said Iran had requested a ceasefire, claiming the country’s “new regime president” had made the request, although he didn’t make clear who he was referring to. Iran’s foreign ministry denied the claim, calling it “false and baseless”.

Israel continued its waves of attacks on Iran, which has also launched missiles at Iraq and Israel.
